Discover Stunningly Clear Vision with RLE

Are You a Candidate for RLE?

What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) refers to replacing the natural lens of the eye with a medically engineered intraocular lens (IOL). These lenses are designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, in addition to presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision.

These lenses are the same as those used in laser cataract surgery, the highest volume and most proven surgery performed in the United States.

What is an IOL?

During RLE, your natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL), a clear, artificial lens designed to restore your vision. Different IOL types provide unique advantages tailored to various lifestyles and visual requirements.

Inland Eye Specialists provides an extensive range of IOL options, including:

Toric IOLs

The toric astigmatism-correcting lens enables patients to see clearly at a distance without needing glasses.

Trifocal/Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal and trifocal lenses are advanced lens technologies designed to minimize reliance on glasses following RLE surgery. Multifocal lenses divide incoming light between two focal points, enhancing both distance and near vision.

Trifocal lenses take this further by creating three distinct focal points for distance, intermediate, and near vision.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) Lenses

Extended depth of focus lenses deliver a complete range of vision by stretching light rather than splitting it. This technology provides patients with crisp distance and intermediate vision while reducing visual disturbances, and also offers functional near vision for reading.

Light Adjustable Lenses

The Light Adjustable Lens is the only IOL that allows post-surgical customization, giving patients confidence before their procedure and truly personalized outcomes. Following surgery, your eye doctor uses a series of comfortable UV-light treatments to fine-tune your lens prescription. Between sessions, you can experience and evaluate your vision adjustments in real-world conditions.

After achieving your optimal visual results, two final "lock-in" treatments permanently set your customized vision.

At your consultation with Inland Eye Specialists, your ophthalmologist will help you choose the best IOL for your lifestyle and vision needs.

Am I a Good Candidate for RLE?

Refractive lens exchange is often a great alternative to LASIK for patients with thin corneas, dry eye, or severe refractive errors. You may also be a good candidate for RLE if you:

  • Are over the age of 40
  • Have early cataract formation
  • Have presbyopia
  • Have had stable vision for at least one year
  • Do not have severe eye conditions like glaucoma
  • Are not pregnant or nursing
  • Have realistic expectations about what RLE can achieve

To find out if RLE is the best choice for your vision correction needs, we invite you to schedule a consultation at Inland Eye Specialists. Your ophthalmologist will consider factors like your medical history, lifestyle, and visual goals to determine whether RLE is right for you.
