What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which works to temporarily reduce muscle contractions. The chemical found in the body that causes the muscles to contract is called acetycholine; BotoxCosmetic prevents the release of this chemical. With less movement, areas that have wrinkles begin to soften, resulting in smoother skin.

How is the treatment administered?

Botox is administered by injecting tiny amounts of the protein into the areas needing treatment, such as in between the brows (glabellar region), forehead and crow's feet. Most patients feel little if any pain.

How long before I notice my wrinkles are softened?

Some patients give testimony that they see some improvement as early as 24 hours after treatment. It is more typical to see improvement within a couple of days and continued improvement during the week following treatment. Response to the treatment may vary between patients.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery is relatively quick involving no down time. Initially, there is some mild swelling at the injection site. Most patients return to their normal activities almost immediately following treatment. Patients should avoid rubbing the area during the first 24 hours after treatment.

How long does it last?

Anyone considering having Botox injections must realize that this treatment is a temporary way to improve the appearance of the skin and regular treatments are recommended every 3 to 6 months. Proper dosing is a critical component in obtaining the best result and to insure the longevity of the treatment.

What is the cost?

Cost will vary according to the amount of areas treated. Your doctor will perform a careful examination prior to treatment to assess your areas of concern and to determine the amount of medicine required.
