All-Laser LASIK

Refractive error is a very common problem that interferes with the eyeʼs ability to see clear and distinct images. Over the last 20 years, the field of refractive surgery has experienced an explosive growth in technology that has enabled refractive surgeons to provide to their patients the most highly advanced treatment for refractive error in the safest manner possible. The two most common refractive procedures performed to correct refractive error are LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK(photorefractive keratectomy). With both procedures, the eximer laser is used to change the surface shape of the cornea to correct myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism. With LASIK, a flap is made and lifted prior to reshaping the cornea. PRK is performed as a surface ablation with no flap creation. Your fellowship-trained LASIK surgeon will decide during your detailed and comprehensive work-up which procedure is best for you.

The latest technologies and most advanced techniques to be developed are available to the patients at Inland Eye Specialists - the first of these being Wavefront-optimized and Wavefront-guided Custom LASIK and PRK. During these procedures, a precise scan of your eye is performed to capture a detailed custom map of the refractive error of your eye. This map includes both lower-order as well as higher-order aberrations. This customized map is then used to guide the laser to create the most precise, individualized treatment of your own unique eye. Lower-order aberrations make up approximately 85% of the refractive error of your eye and include the degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The remainder of your refractive error may be made up of higher-order aberrations - which are visual distortions that can produce glare, halos, starbursts, difficulty seeing at night, and decreased contrast sensitivity. The Wavefront-guided and Wavefront-optimized technologies have the ability to custom-correct most, but not all higher-order aberrations in addition to the lower-order aberrations that are usually corrected with your glasses or contact lenses.

Another advancement in treatment available to patients at IES during their custom treatment is iris registration technology. This technology is used as part of the VISX Star 4 CustomVue Eximer Laser System, which enables a highly advanced and sensitive eye tracking system that follows your eye position up to 4.000 times per second, redirecting laser pulses for precise placement within the treatment zone. This ensures the safest and most accurate treatment possible.

Lastly, we currently use the latest fifth-generation Intralase laser- the IFs - for all LASIK cases for flap creation in all-laser LASIK. This laser creates a bladeless flap in approximately 10 seconds, which is over twice as fast as any other previous generation Intralase lasers in use in Riverside and San Diego Counties. This exponentially increases patient safety and recovery time.
