Dry eye is one of the most common vision complaints we hear about. Patients with dry eye produce fewer tears and the quality of those tears is compromised. The main symptom is a scratchy or sandy feeling. Other symptoms may include stinging or burning of the eye, episodes of excess tearing, pain, and redness of the eye. While these symptoms often cause vision to blur, loss of vision from dry eye is uncommon. Artificial tears are available over the counter, and are often first recommended to manage dry eyes. For people with severe cases of dry eye, prescription eye drops such as Restasis can be obtained by the doctor. Another alternative is temporary or permanent closure of the tear drainage system.
